My process begins by delving into the subconscious, exploring ancient alchemy, archaeology, generational wisdom, and natural imagery. Every painting is unplanned and unfolds into whatever may come up through the process. The intention of each piece is to invoke a sense of the “unfamiliar familiar,” to remind others of feelings, ethereal memories, or concepts that they may have forgotten within the subconscious mind. My inspiration is drawn by endless sources; the vastness of astronomy, petroglyphs on worn rocks, books or essays, sun bleached bone on desert sand, the smell of wet moss in an ancient forest, birth, death, and ultimately the grand dance of trauma and love that we each participate in. These inspirations then transform into watercolor, oil, or acrylic mediums.
Yasmin Gunberg, a second generation American of Middle Eastern, Scandinavian, and Slavic descent, grew up in the Rocky Mountain foothills of Colorado. Her passion for painting blossomed at age sixteen after the death of her mother. At eighteen she was accepted to New York University, Steinhardt Department of Studio Art where she developed her skills as an artist. Missing the inspiration and influence of nature, Yasmin returned to Boulder where she received a degree in Anthropology and Philosophy from the University of Colorado. She now resides in the American Pacific Northwest where she continues to evolve her stylistic paintings, pursue herbal medicine classes, and begin her journey as a birth worker.
